Michael Davis, Bassist From '60s Band MC5, Dies At Age 68
LOS ANGELES -- Michael Davis, the bassist of influential late 1960s rock band MC5, has died of liver failure, his wife said Saturday. He was 68.
Davis died at Enloe Medical Center in Chico, Calif., on Friday afternoon after a month-long hospitalization for liver disease, said Angela Davis.
Born on June 5, 1943, the bassist gained attention in the revolutionary Detroit band MC5 and later played in a version of the group called DKT-MC5 with former MC5 members Wayne Kramer on guitar and Dennis Thompson on drums.
The original MC5 rose to prominence from 1964 to 1972, making waves with incendiary anti-establishment lyrics and a blistering early-punk sound, starting with their first album "Kick Out the Jams," released in 1969.
A sought-after bassist and also producer, Davis was planning to be in Belgium this week recording with punk rock musician Sonny Vincent, said Davis' wife.
Davis had a scare in 2006 when he injured his back in a motorcycle accident on a Southern California freeway. He later co-founded the non-profit Music Is Revolution Foundation, dedicated to supporting music education programs in public schools.
In the last few years, Davis also returned to a love of painting, fostered when he first studied fine arts at Wayne State University in Michigan. He dropped out of the program in 1964 to play music, but started studying art again recently in Oregon and California, with the intention of finishing his bachelor's degree in fine arts.
Davis is survived by his wife, their three sons, and a daughter from a previous marriage. Memorial plans were pending, said Angela Davis.

TV network aims for new viewing audience: dogs (Reuters)
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? Nielsen isn't tracking the network's ratings and broadcasters aren't copying its programs -- not yet, anyway. But a new cable TV station has a fresh audience in its backyard and tails are wagging excitedly.
DogTV, a cable network for dogs, launched in San Diego this past Monday aimed at stay-at-home canines and their workaday owners who want to feel better about time apart. Free at launch, people will eventually pay $4.99 a month for the channel, but that may seem a small for sum for fido's peace of mind.
"We find it helps with separation anxiety, a problem for many dogs, and with keeping dogs relaxed and entertained," said Lisa Wilhoit McCormick, co-owner of Fido & Co. dog country club here, which is the official home of DogTV. "It does look different from human TV - the colors are different and the videos are taken from a dog's point of view."
She said the idea arose from people with stay-at-home dogs who couldn't bring them to a day care facility like Fido & Co. while the owners were at work.
Americans spent more than $45 billion on their pets in 2009, according to the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association. A growing number of the 63 percent of American households with pets are spending more than $4 billion a year on grooming, boarding and doggie day care. So, why not TV?
Dog psychologists and behavior experts put about 400 hours into researching what TV-watching pooches like to see and hear and how programs should look.
DogTV's scientific advisory board includes Dr. Nicholas Dodman, a professor of veterinary medicine and behavior at Tufts University and British dog trainer Victoria Stillwell.
"Every dog has a little different taste in programming," Neumann said. "We have learned a lot and we're hoping to learn more from this launch," according to DogTV chief executive officer Gilead Neumann.
CAR CHASES OUT; SPONGEBOB IN
McCormick said many people already leave their TVs on for their dogs, but programs with car chases, sirens and gunshots can cause stress for canines.
Researchers found that dogs like "SpongeBob SquarePants" and harp music, among other things. They enjoy shows with other dogs in them including the movie "Beverly Hills Chihuahua," a perennial favorite at Fido & Co.
Other DogTV shows include a pooch-eye view from outside car windows set to somber piano music, and the sound of panting, as well as low and close-to-the-ground shots of dogs playing and chasing balls.
One thing you won't find on DogTV: advertising.
"Advertising is difficult for us - our viewers aren't able to speak out or purchase products," Neumann said. "Our content will be 100 percent for dogs, we love our subscribers but they are paying for our efforts to please our viewers."
The channel, which is being broadcast locally by Cox Communications and Time Warner Cable, was developed by a team of Israeli TV entrepreneurs. After the initial launch, customers will pay $4.99 per month for the service. Cox Cable spokeswoman Ceanne Guerra said it's too early to tell how many viewers the show has had, but she does know that a few were her own dogs.
"I did turn it on this morning," Guerra said. "It showed two dogs rough-housing and playing and another one sleeping when I was leaving for work."
At Fido & Co., where a day of play costs about $34, DogTV plays on big screen TVs for the guests, McCormick said.
It helps to put the television near the floor, she noted.

Pew study: Facebook users get more than they give

Facebook, the social network that changed "friend" from a noun to a verb, is expected to file as early as Wednesday to sell stock on the open market. Its debut is likely to be the most talked-about initial public offering since Google in 2004. (AP Photo/Paul Sakuma, File)
NEW YORK (AP) ? The goody-two-shoes among us say it's better to give than to receive. That's not true for the average Facebook user, though.
A new study out Friday found that the average user of the world's biggest online social network gets more than they give. That means more messages, more "likes" and more comments. Yes, even more "pokes."
Behind all that is Facebook's relatively small group of "power users," who do more than their share of tagging, liking and uploading. The report from the Pew Research Center's Internet and American Life Project comes two days after Facebook filed for a $5 billion initial public offering of stock that could eventually value the company at $100 billion.
Key to that mammoth valuation will be Facebook's ability to convince advertisers they can make money from the billons of connections and interactions that people partake in on its website and beyond. Though Pew's findings don't address the commercial side of people's activities, they shed important light on how people use the site and what they get out of it.
The study is the product of Pew's analysis of Facebook users' activities in November 2010. It consisted of data that Facebook provided to Pew after 269 users gave their permission. Those users were identified through a random telephone survey about broader Internet issues.
The researchers found that about 20 percent to 30 percent of Facebook users fell into the "power user" category, though they tended to specialize in different types of activities on Facebook. Some of them sent a lot of friend requests, while others tagged more photos than the average user. Only 5 percent were power users in every activity that Pew logged.
The way this plays out is that the average user is more "liked" than they click "like" on other's posts. They receive more friend requests than they send. On average, 63 percent of Facebook users studied received friend requests in the survey month while only 40 percent made a friend request.
The result? It feels good to be on Facebook. It might even feel better than life off Facebook. After all, there's no dislike button, and friends are unlikely to post harsh comments on your page. Instead, people you might not have seen in years bombard you with positive affirmations day after day, year after year.
"You keep getting all these wonderful positive rewards," said Keith Hampton, the study's main author and a Rutgers University professor. "That's pretty hard to give up."
Getting more than you are giving, in terms of emotional support, "is kind of what you are looking for," he added.
This might be the lure of Facebook, the reason it could be worth $100 billion and the reason it has 845 million users who are not leaving even if they've been on the site for years. The study found no evidence of "Facebook fatigue," the idea that people get tired of Facebook after they've been on it for a long time.
In fact it was the opposite. The longer someone had been using Facebook, the more frequently they posted status updates, pressed "like" and commented on friends' content.
"For most people, the longer they are on Facebook, the more they do on Facebook," Hampton said.
The researchers also looked at poking, the weird, perhaps least-understood and easily joked-about activity on Facebook. They found that the "poke" button was among the least-practiced activities. Only 6 percent of users poked a friend, while 7 percent were poked during the month.
"While uncommon, some Facebook users are frequent pokers," the report says. "Five participants from our sample poked nearly once a day, being poked themselves a nearly equal number of times."
The original phone survey of 2,255 adults was done in October and November of 2010 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.3 percentage points. At the end of that survey, users were asked for consent for Facebook to share data. Twelve percent of the survey participants agreed.

Women, less conservative voters carry Romney in FL (AP)
WASHINGTON ? Women abandoned Newt Gingrich in droves Tuesday and helped fuel former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney's triumph in Florida's Republican presidential primary, according to preliminary data from an exit poll of voters.
While Romney held a narrow lead over the former House speaker among men, he easily outdistanced him among women, winning around five of their votes for every three that went to Gingrich. In the three states in which Republicans had already voted for their presidential nominee ? Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina ? there was relatively little difference in how the sexes divided their votes between the two rivals.
Some of the data Tuesday suggested that many women's votes were influenced by a personal distaste for Gingrich. Asked their views of him as a person, men said they generally viewed him favorably by just under a 2-1 margin, while women were about evenly divided.
Asked if they would be satisfied if Gingrich won the GOP nomination, men said yes by nearly a 6-4 margin while women were closely split. In addition, while men divided about evenly between Gingrich and Romney over which candidate best understood average Americans' problems, women leaned toward Romney.
Women expressed stronger positive feelings about Romney than men did, but the difference between them was slight. More than 7 in 10 men and women expressed favorable views of Romney personally.
Romney's triumph came after a campaign in Florida in which he and his supporters outspent Gingrich on television ads by nearly a 5-1 margin, with many of the ads raising attacking the former speaker's character. None mentioned Gingrich's three marriages or the charges by his second wife, Marianne, that he asked permission for an open marriage before they were divorced, an allegation Gingrich has denied.
Early voters also gave Romney more of an edge. Those in the poll who voted early or by absentee ballot backed Romney by around a 2-1 majority, a stronger edge than he won among those at the polling places on Tuesday. Before Tuesday's voting, analysts thought Gingrich might pick up some late momentum in Florida because of his victory in South Carolina's Jan. 21 GOP primary.
Gingrich also showed more strength among lower-earning people and those hurting from Florida's economic ills.
Though Romney won among every income category, he did more strongly among higher-income voters than among those nearer the bottom economic rung. Gingrich managed to split the one-quarter of voters with Romney who said they are falling behind economically. And Gingrich did better among the half of voters who said home foreclosures are a major problem in their communities than he did among those who said it wasn't so bad.
The exit poll also showed Romney did better with less conservative people than with those considering themselves very conservative.
Gingrich prevailed among people who said they are very conservative, while Romney had a decisive edge among Florida GOP voters who are somewhat conservative, moderate or liberal. The two candidates split tea party supporters about evenly, while Romney won strongly among all others.
Around 6 in 10 Florida GOP voters said the economy was their biggest issue. They preferred Romney by about 20 percentage points.
The survey of 2,739 voters Republican voters was conducted for The Associated Press and the television networks by Edison Research. This includes preliminary results among 2,139 voters interviewed Tuesday as they left their polling places at 40 randomly selected sites in Florida. In addition, 600 who voted early or absentee were interviewed by landline or cellular telephone from Jan. 23 to 29. The survey has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

Halle Berry and Gabriel Aubry Urged to Undergo Counseling
Halle Berry and Gabriel Aubry spent hours inside a Los Angeles courtroom yesterday, but little was accomplished in terms of settling on what changes would be made to the pair's custody arrangement.
The former couple is at odds because Aubry is under investigation for allegedly shoving his nanny while she cradled daughter Nahla,in her arms. Berry wants her ex to be barred from contact with Nahla until the investigation is complete.
But that determination was not decided by a judge yesterday.
Instead, according to TMZ, the L.A. County Department of Children and Family Services submitted various recommendation for Halle and Gabriel, including third party mediation. She was reportedly open to the idea; he was not.
Both parties did, however, agree to send Nahla to counseling, while Berry will undergo therapy on her own and Aubry had already said he was open to anger management courses.
The judge did not rule on the nanny's fate, or on Berry's request to prevent contact between Nahla and Aubry. A full trial may be convened in the near future to deal with these issues.
