BEIRUT (AP) ? Syria's president promised to do all he can to ensure U.N. envoy Kofi Annan's peace plan for his country succeeds but demanded that Annan secure a commitment from his opponents to halt violence even as rebels carried out a string of bold attacks, killing two army colonels and kidnapping a high-ranking pilot.

Bashar Assad's condition of an express promise from the opposition to stop attacks could complicate Annan's attempts to bring an end to more than a year of violence that the U.N. says has killed more than 9,000 people.

The opposition has cautiously welcomed Annan's six-point plan, which calls for Assad's regime to implement a cease-fire. But the opposition is also deeply skeptical Assad will carry it out, believing he has accepted the plan just to win time while his forces continue their assault to crush the uprising. Armed rebels are unlikely to stop fighting unless offensives by security forces halt.

The diplomatic moves came as Arab leaders met Thursday in the Iraqi capital Baghdad in their annual summit and were expected to issue a resolution backing Annan's plan. In speeches at the summit, many leaders made clear they felt the burden was on Assad's regime to halt the fighting.

"The Syrian government is required today to listen to the voice of reason and wisdom and stop all kinds of violence," the emir of Kuwait told the gathering.

In comments carried on Syria's state news agency, Assad said "Syria will spare no effort to make (Annan's) mission a success and hopes it would return security and stability to the country."

But he added that Annan must also get a commitment from armed groups to cease their "terrorist acts" against the government.

Throughout the crisis, Assad's regime has held that it faces not a popular uprising against his rule but a campaign of violence by terrorists.

Syria's uprising began a year ago with peaceful protests against Assad, which were met with a fierce crackdown by security forces. Since then, army defectors and protesters who took up weapons have formed militias, initially to protect protesters. But as the bloodshed rose, they turned to seizing pro-opposition neighborhoods, towns and areas and launching attacks on government forces, usually raids on checkpoints or on army convoys.

The new attacks Thursday were particularly bold.

In Aleppo, Syria's largest city, gunmen opened fire on two army colonels in the downtown Bab al-Hadid traffic circle, killing them. The state news agency SANA said the four attackers belonged to an "armed terrorist group." The officers, identified as Abdel-Karim al-Rai and Fuad Shaban, were on their way to work.

In eastern Ghouta, a suburb a few kilometers (miles) from Damascus, gunmen kidnapped pilot Mohammad Omar al-Dirbas, a brigadier, while on his way to work, SANA said. The agency did not say where the three worked or what their positions were.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attacks.

Also Thursday, rebels attacked an army truck and killed two soldiers in the central province of Hama, activists said. Fresh clashes also broke out between government troops and army defectors in the country's north and south, and activists said security forces killed at least 16 civilians across Syria on Thursday, including a child and two women.

SANA said authorities successfully liberated five military personnel who it said were kidnapped earlier by an "armed group" in the northern province of Idlib.

Aleppo has largely been spared clashes between government forces and rebels. However, two mysterious bombings in the city this month killed 29 people. No group claimed responsibility.

The U.N. says more than 9,000 people have been killed since Syrians first took to the streets last year to call for political reforms.

In Thursday's attack on the army truck in central Hama province, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said rebels killed two soldiers.

The group said at least five civilians were killed Thursday in army raids on rebellious villages in the Idlib province along Syria's northern border with Turkey. It also reported clashes in the southern town of Dael.

An activist in that town said residents woke up to a huge explosion followed by intense gunfire. He said the fighting and gunfire from government snipers have kept civilians pinned in their homes.

"The security situation is very hard, with snipers on the roofs," Adel al-Omari said over the phone. "It is very dangerous here, and you can't leave your house. Anyone who moves is targeted."

The Observatory said eight soldiers were wounded in the Dael clashes.

The group said security forces killed at least 16 civilians across Syria on Thursday, while another group, the Local Coordination Committees, put the day's death toll at 31, including a child and two women.

Activist claims could not be independently verified. The Syrian government rarely comments on clashes and has barred most news media from working in the country.

Industry and community leaders and country music stars traded turns in the spotlight Monday evening during the fourth annual T.J. Martell Foundation Honors Gala, held at the Hutton Hotel in Nashville.

The foundation saluted five local figures ? country legend Kris Kristofferson; veteran music industry leader Joe Galante; Gaylord Entertainment Company Chairman and CEO Colin Reed; Nashville Predators Chairman/co-owner and Healthways co-founder Tom Cigarran; and Dr. C. Wright Pinson, deputy vice chancellor for Health Affairs and CEO of Vanderbilt Health System ? during the event, which raises money and awareness for cancer research.

The five honorees exchanged hugs and handshakes and posed for photos before the event, as attendees bid on music memorabilia, getaways and other items in a silent and live auction held outside the hotel?s Vista Ballroom.

?I?m not used to being on this side of it,? said Galante, former chairman of Sony Music Nashville. ?I?m normally giving somebody the plaque or the award, so it?s a very humbling experience, and it?ll be kind of emotional to look back over 40 years.?

Cigarran and Reed said they shared their honors with those working in their organizations.

?So many of our people give their personal time to charities, causes, all the way through this community,? Reed said. ?So as the CEO of Gaylord, I get honored, but it?s our people that have caused it and made it happen.?

Helping salute the 2012 honorees was a crew of big music names: Dolly Parton and Kenny Chesney were on hand to present the Tony Martell Lifetime Entertainment Achievement Award to Galante, and performers included Charlie Daniels, Ronnie Dunn, Emmylou Harris, Bruce Hornsby, Martina McBride, K.T. Oslin and Vince Gill, who also served as host of the event. Gill joked to the audience that he was the best host available on short notice, but he spoke sincerely of his involvement with the organization and their ?passion to try to make things better for somebody else? before the event.

?I like being on that boat,? he said.

Daniels said he was honored to be performing and presenting the award to Pinson, adding that he?s counted organization founder Tony Martell as a personal friend for more than 30 years.

?I?ve seen the results of the money raised and the lives that have been changed, and I?m very, very much into this.?

Pinson said receiving his award was ?a really wonderful thing,? but jokingly expressed some concern about the ?Lifetime? in ?Lifetime Achievement.?

?That does have an implication that maybe you?re about through, and I am not about through. I?ve got a lot of things that I want to accomplish before I throw in the towel.?

Items up for bid at the auctions included Daniels? handwritten lyrics of his classic ?The Devil Went Down to Georgia,? signed guitars from Gill, Darius Rucker and Rodney Atkins and trips to the 2012 U.S. Open and Kentucky Derby and other getaways. The country music stars participated in the bidding end, as well ? Dunn had the winning $12,000 bid on a signed Kristofferson guitar and photo, which was followed by Kristofferson putting a private acoustic performance up for bid, fetching $25,000.

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's parliament moved Sunday toward a vote to order an end to more than $1 billion in U.S. aid, a reflection of tensions with Washington over the case of Americans charged with illegal activity by their pro-democracy groups.

The U.S. was angry enough over the charges against the American workers that it threatened to cut off aid to Egypt. The measure in the Islamist-dominated Egyptian parliament, probably just symbolic, showed that there is considerable anger in Cairo over charges that U.S. pressure led to interference in the judicial process.

The 508-seat chamber also voted to start the process of a no-confidence vote in the military-backed government, a move that, if successful, could spark a political crisis with just under four months left before the military is scheduled to hand over power to a civilian administration.

The move by the People's Assembly against U.S. aid was sparked by the March 1 departure of six American defendants in a case of 43 employees of nonprofit groups accused of using illegal foreign funds to foment unrest in Egypt.

The 43 include 16 Americans, nine of whom were already outside the country when the case was referred to trial. One opted to stay behind.

The rest of the 43 are mostly Egyptians, Jordanians, Palestinians and Germans.

The U.S. threatened to cut off aid to Egypt over the issue, but the departure of the six partially eased the crisis, the worst between the two allies in 30 years.

Even if the chamber voted to reject U.S. aid, the move could amount to only a symbolic gesture, given the wide powers enjoyed by the generals, who collectively act as the presidency. They would likely veto such a measure in the name of national security.

The exit of the American defendants set off a storm in Egypt, prompting many to accuse the ruling generals of bowing to U.S. pressure and intervening in the work of the judiciary. Egypt's military has benefited the most from the nation's close ties with the United States. It is due to get $1.3 billion in aid this year. U.S. economic assistance for 2012 is about $250 million.

In Sunday's session, lawmakers complained the U.S. had no respect for Egypt's sovereignty and called for a vote on a no-confidence motion in Prime Minister Kamal el-Ganzouri's government. The move against the government came after four Cabinet ministers briefed the chamber on the case. Lawmakers constantly interrupted their testimony and later said the ministers did not show enough respect for the parliament.

Lawmakers said el-Ganzouri's government should be replaced by a coalition that mirrors the makeup of the legislature, where Islamists hold more than 70 percent of the seats. The military rulers say only they have the right to dismiss the Cabinet.

Several lawmakers also said it was the generals and not the government that must be questioned about the nation's "humiliation" by the United States over the case. The generals have said they had nothing to do with the Americans' departure and that the entire affair was in the hands of the judiciary. However, the judge who presided over the trial's opening hearing on Feb. 26 excused himself late last month, citing uneasiness.

Judge Mahmoud Mohammed Shoukri later said in comments to the media that he quit to protest political meddling in the case, which is now being tried by another Cairo court.

"I wish members of the U.S. Congress could listen to you now to realize that this is the parliament of the revolution, which does not allow a breach of the nation's sovereignty or interference in its affairs," Parliament Speaker Saad el-Katatni, an Islamist from the chamber's largest party, told lawmakers.

Suggesting that a crisis was looming between the legislature and the Cabinet, el-Katatni adjourned the session until Monday. He said Cabinet ministers scheduled to answer lawmakers' questions failed to show up.

"It seems that the government is pushing for a crisis with parliament," el-Katatni said.

The problem with the old furniture, other than being old, was it seemed to crowd the room. We wanted more open space and decided to look at smaller pieces and place them at different angles. a few inches will make a big difference in a room. many fabrics and styles were available in a multitude of colors. We then chose a coordinating accent chair that really made the room look fresh and new. with childhood excitement, we picked the occasional tables and other accessories to finish off the room. Our purchase arrived on time and in perfect condition. We were delighted with the style and quality of the furniture. after attaching a few legs we moved the magic inside. that fresh new look had entered our home and wow what a difference.
