Position supervises approximately 25-30 pool and fitness
student staff, and provides assistance in oversight of all professional and student employees in the Campus Recreation Department. In the
absence of the Director, position supervises all professional staff positions.
Examples of Work Performed
Associate Director Responsibilities:
- Serve as acting Director in the absence of the Director and possess a working knowledge of all aspects of the Campus Recreation facility and its programs.
- Develop and update as necessary operating procedures and manuals for the facility.
- The budget is established through the office of the Associate Vice Chancellor for Administration and Finance (AVCAF). Monitor the established operating budget for the aquatics program and assure that expenditures are contained within authorized spending authority including purchases, security and inventory of fitness testing equipment. Monitor revenues to attain budget requirements.
- Work with the Director in overseeing and updating risk management practices and policies dealing with Campus Recreation facilities and programs.
- Provide oversight to departmental social media accounts and ensure appropriate and timely information is distributed through these channels.
- Monitor and update the departmental website as necessary.
- Assist the Director in the management and oversight of the facility, programs, and staff.
- Oversee the daily operation of an indoor aquatic facility in the campus recreation center, consisting of a 25 yard lap pool, connected leisure pool, and spa.
- Hire, train, schedule, and supervise student staff to serve as lifeguards and swim instructors in the facility.
- Develop, implement, and market a variety of aquatics programs for students and the community, including learn to swim, water exercise, water safety, social, and recreational programs. During low student usage times, create community and non-student programming to generate revenue.
- Teach or coordinate classes to certify staff in Lifeguarding, WSI, First Aid, and CPR/AED as necessary.
- Ensure proper maintenance of pool mechanical equipment, chemical equipment, cleaning, and chemical levels in the facility.
- Develop and oversee appropriate aquatic and fitness risk management guidelines and practices.
- Develop and maintain accurate records and data pertaining to user loads, program participation, revenue generation, pool cleaning and chemical levels.
- Work with the Coordinator of Informal Recreation and the Scheduling Office to coordinate scheduling of the facility to allow for a number of different uses including: lap swimming, recreational swimming, classes, intramural sports events, club sports, community swimming, and private rentals.
- Produce marketing materials to promote aquatic and fitness programs and activities, including flyers, website updates, posters, newspaper ads, and digital ads.
- Oversee condition of aquatic equipment and order new equipment as necessary and within budgeted spending authority.
- Provide first aid, CPR and AED training for department employees, both student and professional staff.
- Supervise the student fitness coordinator and provide oversight and guidance.
- Promote and market group fitness programs, personal training and fitness assessments.
- Hire, train, schedule and supervise group fitness instructors, personal trainers and fitness center staff.
- Develop and maintain operating guidelines and procedures for the fitness areas in the campus recreation center.
- Develop programs to encourage general student and campus wellness and fitness.
- Develop and implement procedures and guidelines for personal training, fitness orientations, fitness assessments. Train clients as needed.
- Work with summer conferences to provide programming for attendees.
- Serve as primary coordinator for the annual campus fun run/walk.
- Be willing to respond to issues with the facility, programs or staff during non-work hours to include early mornings, evenings, and weekends.
- Be willing to work evenings and weekends as needed to assist with programs and activities.
- Work collegially and cooperatively with other campus units including but not limited to Risk Management, Environmental Health and Safety, University Police, the University Center and Facilities Services.
$50,000 - $67,500 Annually

Required Education/Experience/Skills (Minimum Qualifications): Bachelor's degree required (Master's preferred) in recreation, sports administration or related field
4+ years of progressively responsible professional experience in recreation program and facility management.
Willing to work a variety of hours and shifts to provide management level supervision in the Recreation Center.

Successful Candidate must pass a background check to include license and educational verification, prior employment verification, sex offender registry check, criminal history, and credit history.
