The director of the USDA's National Institute of Food and Agriculture, will be speaking twice at Entomology 2012 this November

The Entomological Society of America (ESA) is honored to announce that Sonny Ramaswamy, Director of the USDA's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA), will be speaking twice at Entomology 2012, ESA's 60th Annual Meeting to be held November 11-14, 2012 in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Dr. Ramaswamy, who became an ESA Fellow in 2005 (see http://entsoc.org/fellows/sonny-b-ramaswamy-esa-fellow-2005) and has been an ESA member for more than 30 years, will address ESA members on November 13 at 12:15 during a "Lunch and Learn" session in which he will talk about grant opportunities at NIFA, and again at 2:30 at a special student session.

His appointment as the Director of NIFA was announced in March, 2012.

According to ESA President Grayson Brown, "His appointment is a recognition of the outstanding record of leadership that he has established over the years, and I can think of no one better equipped to lead this important institute. While we realize that NIFA supports many programs, we in entomology are especially proud that one of 'us' is in this high post."

Dr. Ramaswamy received his M.S. in entomology from the University of Agricultural Sciences in Bangalore, India (1976) and his Ph.D. in entomology from Rutgers University (1980). He was a postdoctoral researcher at Michigan State University (1979-82); an assistant, associate, and full professor at Mississippi State University (1982-97); a professor, university distinguished professor and head of the Kansas State University Department of Entomology (1997-2004); associate dean of Purdue's College of Agriculture, where he directed the University's agricultural research programs from 2006 to 2009; and dean of Oregon State University's College of Agricultural Sciences.

His research areas have included the integrative reproductive biology of insects, encompassing endocrine and ovarian physiology, chemical ecology, pheromones and sexual behavior and their regulation by hormones, structure and function of sensory receptors as related to host finding and mating in insects, and modification of insect behavior using natural products. He has published more than 100 journal papers.

Entomology 2012 will be attended by 3,000 entomologists and will feature 98 symposia and more than 2,500 presentations, plus entomological excursions, social events, student competitions, the Linnaean Games, and more. For more information, visit http://www.entsoc.org/entomology2012.

Lag spikes while gaming online

Hey guys, It's just been a few days since I got my 5net connection, it was great for online gaming for first 2 days, got >10 pings, but then it suddenly started having ' Lag spikes ' like the latency becomes 300-400 for 3 seconds during which I'm stuck in the game.

This is very annoying because it ruins the experience. I got 5net for its >10 pings, which it provides but every 10 seconds I get a lag spike lasting 3 seconds. This makes it impossible to play online

I have checked with my MTNL connection, which, although offers ~30 ping on the same servers, has 0% lag spikes. it's a smooth experience all-through.

Is there any solution for this problem? Can cablewalah do anything to sort this out?

Facebook posts in hostage case worry police

4 hrs.

Pittsburgh?police said they had serious concerns when an armed man took a business owner hostage in a downtown high-rise office building ? and not just because he had a knife.

The suspect, 22-year-old Klein Michael Thaxton, made Facebook posts during the five-hour ordeal Friday, authorities said, and they feared that responses from friends, family and others might goad him into violence.

In the end, police say, Thaxton surrendered peacefully and released businessman Charles Breitsman.

Now police believe that Thaxton might have chosen Breitsman because he spotted a smartphone and computer in his office and saw a high-profile opportunity to express himself on the social networking site, Chief Nathan Harper said.

Thaxton was arraigned early Saturday on felony charges of kidnapping, aggravated assault and making terroristic threats. He remains jailed on $1 million bail.

Harper said authorities might never know the reason Thaxton decided to take a hostage.

"We will leave that to the mental professionals to figure that out and get the man some help," Harper said. Thaxton will automatically receive a mental health review because of the charges.

Thaxton told police he left a halfway house about 3 a.m. Friday carrying a kitchen knife, hammer, cellphone and charger. After meandering through various neighborhoods, Thaxton arrived downtown at about 7 a.m. and briefly considered attacking two separate traffic officers with the hammer so he could steal their guns, police said.

"It makes me feel powerful when I have a gun," Harper said Thaxton told police.

Deciding he might get shot in the process, Thaxton instead sat and munched on a candy bar and noticed women streaming into a 24-story high-rise, police said. Without any particular goal, Thaxton took an elevator to two upper floors, found he couldn't get around without an electric key card and went down to the 16th floor.

That's where Thaxton saw the financial firm CW Breitsman Associates and the owner's name on the door. He also saw a smartphone, TV and computer and "felt this was the office where he needed to be," Harper said.

Except for the electronics, Thaxton's choosing the office was "totally random," Harper said, noting Thaxton didn't know Breitsman or his firm, which handles union pensions and insurance funds.

Police initially believed Thaxton had a gun because he told police negotiators he was going to shoot the victim. Instead, he threatened Breitsman with the knife, sat across a table from him breathing threats and, otherwise, used Breitsman's phone and computer to post mostly forlorn Facebook messages, police said.

"i cant take it no more im done bro," said one post.

"this life im livin rite now i dnt want anymore," another post said. "ive lost everything and I aint gettin it back."

Thaxton has been in legal trouble in recent months, pleading guilty in January to robbery for a carjacking last year. That crime was apparently on his mind, Harper said, because his carjacking victim was a woman and Thaxton told police the only other reason he picked Breitsman was that "he didn't want to victimize another female."

Thaxton was sentenced to six to 12 months in jail by the county's newly established court to help veterans with mental health and substance abuse issues. It wasn't immediately clear how Thaxton's service record contributed ? if at all ? to his mental health problems because he never saw active duty.

Instead, records show Thaxton served as a private in the U.S. Army from December 2008 to June 2010. The Army said he trained at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri before being assigned to Fort Riley in Kansas.

Whatever the motivation, Thaxton felt a need to call attention to his feelings through Facebook and told police he watched coverage of the hostage situation on his victim's TV.

Initially, police wanted the Facebook page kept open, hoping to gain useful information, but they later asked Facebook to take it down so that Thaxton could focus on conversations with police negotiators.

Most of the 700 or so responses to Thaxton's posts were from friends or family expressing their love. But a few were "ridiculous" and others were "outright distasteful," Harper said. Police were still sifting through them Friday, but Harper said any posters who authorities determine urged Thaxton to harm Breitsman or himself could eventually face charges, too.

Thaxton eventually told police negotiators he wanted to speak with an ex-girlfriend whom he hadn't seen since 2008. After shutting down the Facebook page and getting the woman on the phone to speak with Thaxton, he surrendered peacefully.

Breitsman was interviewed by detectives at police headquarters but left through a back door to avoid the media. He didn't return calls to his home Friday. Harper said the man was doing fine though "quite shaken."

Facebook didn't comment on the hostage-taking but referred reporters to a Web page that says it sometimes shares information with law enforcement if necessary to "prevent imminent bodily harm" to someone.

Some of the social network's nearly 1 billion users boast about their criminal exploits on Facebook, making it easier for law enforcement to catch them. Just last month, a woman charged with posing as a nurse and kidnapping a newborn at a Pittsburgh hospital was tracked down using messages she posted about her faked pregnancy on Facebook.

In Thaxton's case, Facebook didn't completely explain his actions nor would he as he was led past reporters at police headquarters.

Instead he grinned and ignored their questions saying, "I can't hear you, bro."

How to Build a Real Estate Investment Portfolio with Minimum Risk ...

Article by Michael Roche

The percentages vary from one report to another but there is no question that a very high percentage of multi-millionaires attribute their financial success to real estate investments. That doesn?t address how much money they started with or what connections they had to get started. After all, Donald Trump didn?t start with zero assets. Most of us will never create a real estate empire and are not ready to mitigate the risk in doing so but are dedicated to embarking on a conservative real estate investment approach to building a retirement nest egg.
The television screen is proliferated with Info-commercials promoting the investment property buy to sell (flipping) concept of attaining wealth. Investors who buy low to sell high take substantial risk but the rewards can be significant if all goes well. Residential real estate has lower or more manageable risk factors than commercial investments and requires far less knowledge and experience. The downside of flipping is the intangible expense associated with repair costs, extended marketing time and other unforeseen factors. Properties that fit into the ?handyman special? category are frequently not so special when repairs are underestimated or unforeseen problems surface. This is an investment that can provide a sizable return on the invested dollar but that doesn?t happen as frequently as new investors are led to believe. The opposite is far more prevalent.
Many successful real estate investors started by buying their first home and found that when it was time to move up to a larger or more comfortable home they could rent their existing home for more than their monthly expense. The key factor is the financial capability of handling the expense of purchasing the new property without compromising the equity gained in the existing property. Mortgage lender?s qualifying criteria requires that 25% of the rent be allotted to vacancy and maintenance factors. Whereas in most cases, expenses are not likely to be that high, this is an important consideration. Some houses, town homes or condominiums lend themselves to becoming rental properties and others do not. For example, older houses, charming as they might be are likely to require above average maintenance expense. Condominiums regardless of association fees can make excellent rental properties because those fees normally cover insurance, all outside maintenance and sometimes certain utilities. Investment experts frequently recommend renting properties slightly below market. Twenty five dollars per month is a lot of money to many renters and just a couple of months of vacancy can erase gains from higher rents.
The second move up frequently falls into the ?dream home? category and it may be more difficult to keep the current home as a rental property depending upon price range, equity requirements for down payment and the expense to improve or furnish the property into the dream home echelon.
Many investors buy second homes with the idea of converting them to rental properties at some point in time. Seasonal properties in highly desirable vacation locations with close proximity to beaches, golf or skiing can be excellent investments. A few months of rent over the season can cover expenses for an entire year leaving the property available for personal use during off season months. The complexity with seasonal rental is that the properties must be furnished, well maintained and usually need to be placed in control of a management company. Astute investors are aware that those who live and work in resort areas expect to pay comparatively higher rents than in less exciting locations and may opt for a local yearly tenant; a less risky option. Ten minutes from the beach is a feature that commands higher rents even for many local residents.
If the long term goal is to create financial independence for the retirement years the residential real estate investment game is a relatively simple proposition but there are some basic rules.
? Keep your eyes on the prize. Be patient and focus on the long range plan. Building equity in your home and just two or three rental properties over twenty plus years can set you free financially.
? Don?t take a second mortgage or cash out refinance your real estate even to buy more properties. Compromising one good investment to create another is seldom a good plan.
? Know your marketplace or thoroughly research markets that you are unfamiliar with. Be careful of the ?deal that is too good to be true?. It usually is but conduct your research. Unless the seller is a rich relative that just wants to cut you a deal, there is usually a very good reason for an under priced property.
? The real estate market is constantly changing. Watch for opportunities in every economic environment. Don?t procrastinate or waver when instincts say the deal is right.
? Make sure your personal and professional life is in order. Divorce and career set backs are the major causes of an investment plan that falls short.
? And most of all, do not stretch your financial ability for the purpose of taking advantage of an opportunity. Rainey days occur in almost everyone?s life and like any investment, staying power is critical to staying the course.
Over time, it does not take exceptional income or wealth to build a substantial real estate portfolio that will make the retirement years very comfortable. It does take a stable source of income, a stable personal environment and a commitment to stay the path. The conservative or low risk approach not only provides peace of mind but allows for small mistakes to be made without compromising the ultimate goal.

White Sox fall, stay 2 ahead of Tigers

Associated Press Sports

updated 10:39 p.m. ET Sept. 20, 2012

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Kansas City catcher Salvador Perez threw out Alex Rios at the plate and picked off Alexei Ramirez at third base, and the AL Central-leading Chicago White Sox kept missing chances Thursday night in a 4-3 loss to the Royals.

Eric Hosmer singled home the winning run with two outs in the ninth inning. The White Sox stayed two games ahead of Detroit, which lost in the afternoon to Oakland, with 13 games remaining.

Chicago wasted an early 3-0 lead and lost the sub-.500 Royals for the ninth time in their last 11 meetings.

Billy Butler led off the Royals ninth with a single against Jesse Crain (2-3). With two outs, pinch runner Jarrod Dyson stole second and Jeff Francoeur was walked intentionally. Matt Thornton relieved and Hosmer singled down the third base line.

Greg Holland (7-4) worked a scoreless ninth for the victory.

Rios tried to score with one out in the third when Jeremy Guthrie's pitch rolled a few feet behind Perez. But Perez's toss to Guthrie covering the plate beat Rios.

Perez nabbed Ramirez in the fourth for his fifth pickoff, most among major league catchers.

After going 1 for 12 with runners in scoring position in Wednesday's 3-0 loss to Kansas City, the White Sox went 1 for 8 in those situations and stranded seven runners. Chicago is hitting .190 with runners in scoring position over the past 19 games.

The White Sox jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but failed to hold it.

Alejandro De Aza, Adam Dunn and A.J. Pierzynski singled in the first to take a 1-0 lead.

Guthrie committed a throwing error in the second that led to two unearned runs. He walked Dan Johnson and gave up an infield single to Alexei Ramirez, then didn't cleanly come up with Gordon Beckham's sacrifice bunt and made a wild throw to first that allowed a run to score. Dewayne Wise added an RBI grounder.

Francisco Liriano held the Royals to one hit the first four innings, but gave up a two-run triple to Johnny Giavotella in the fifth. The Royals tied it in the third when Butler's double scored Alex Gordon. Butler has 99 RBIs, the most by a Royals player since Carlos Beltran's 100 in 2003.

Guthrie left after six innings, allowing three runs, one earned, on eight hits. Guthrie is 4-0 with five no-decisions and a 1.75 ERA in his past nine starts, all of which the Royals have won.

NOTES: White Sox 1B Paul Konerko was held out of the lineup with a sore back. Rios replaced him in the cleanup slot. ... Chicago 3B Kevin Youkilis, who was hitless in 11 at-bats and batting .133 in the past 17 games, was dropped from the second spot to the sixth slot. ... The White Sox continue their trip with a weekend series at Los Angeles. RHP Jake Peavy will start Friday night against the Angels. He is 0-2 with a 5.04 ERA in four career starts vs. the Angels. ... RHP Luis Mendoza, who had strep throat and was scratched from a Wednesday start, will start Friday for the Royals against Cleveland. ... Perez has picked off a franchise-record eight in 104 career games. Darrell Porter held the club record with seven in 492 Royals games from 1977-80.

Google Maps for Android update brings your mapping search history to handhelds

While Google Maps may have found itself on the outside looking in on the just-released iOS 6, it's got a fresh update for Android devices that makes sure any locations you've searched are right at your fingertips. Rolling out now in Google Play, it includes results from your search and directions history (whether on your phone or on a PC that you were logged in to) whenever you start a new search, and in the search or directions tab under My Places. The other tweak noted in the changelog is the ability to zoom with just one finger -- double tap the map then hold down your finger and slide. There's no word specifically on what's in store for Apple's hardware but the final line of the blog post mentions improving the Google Maps experience across all devices -- draw your own conclusions from that.

Oyster genome mystery unravelled

A detailed map of the Pacific oyster genome has been unveiled by scientists.

The research, published in the journal Nature, shows how oysters manage to survive the harsh environment of the estuary and sea shore.

The mollusc has scores of genes that protect it from extremes of temperature and saltiness, where the land meets the sea.

Oyster farming is a multi-million dollar industry, centred around China, Japan, Korea and the US.

There's clearly been adaptations over millions of years to allow these animals to cope with an incredibly harsh environment?

End Quote Prof Peter Holland University of Oxford

The genome map gives an insight into how the oyster became adapted to marine life, and how it formed its complex shell.

It also reveals secrets that may help scientists breed faster-growing oysters with a better survival rate.

A team of international scientists, from China, the US, and Europe, carried out the genome sequencing work.

Peter Holland, professor of zoology at the University of Oxford, and a co-author of the research, says the oyster has more than 80 genes that protect the oyster from stress.

It gives a fascinating insight into the life of a creature adapted to the intertidal zone, he said.

He told BBC News: "We can actually see in the genome a reflection of these adaptations.

"There's clearly been adaptations over millions of years to allow these animals to cope with an incredibly harsh environment."

The DNA sequence of the oyster will be compared with other mollusc genomes, including the California sea hare and the giant owl limpet.

The Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas lives in estuaries, intertidal and subtidal zones.

Intertidal zones lie on the shore between the high and low tide marks, where animals and plants must cope with being submerged in salt water for part of the day and exposed to the Sun for the rest of the time.

Molluscs that are able to survive in this habitat also need to survive attack by a host of predators, from birds to small mammals.

REAL ESTATE: Home builder confidence hits highest level in 6 - blog

Posted on | September 18, 2012 | Comments

Confidence among U.S. homebuilders hit its highest level in six years, a new report by the National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo said.

The builder sentiment index increased 3 percentage points to 40, up from 37 in August.

Richmond American Homes showcasing its new model home in the Inland Empire.

It was the highest reading since June 2006, the summer before the housing market hit the skids and the bubble on building and buying burst. Still, the reading remains 10 points below 50, the dividing line between negative and positive sentiment about the new home building market.

The index has traveled a long distance since December 2011 when the survey to gauge builder confidence was below 20.

This fifth straight month of improvement in builder confidence proves further assurance that the housing market is moving in a positive direction,? NAHB chief economist David Crowe said in a statement. ?But there?s still a long way to go on the road to recovery, and several obstacles are slowing our progress.?

Unnecessarily tight credit conditions are preventing many builders from putting crews back to work, which would create needed jobs, and help spur a new-home purchase, he said. Other detractors for market growth include rising building material lots and the lack of lots for new home construction in certain markets.

?Given the fragile nature of the housing and economic recovery, these are significant red flags,? he said.

Eclipse season on Mars, so Curiosity took photos

WASHINGTON (AP) ? On Mars, a partial eclipse of the sun isn't quite as rare as on Earth. So NASA's Mars Curiosity rover is snapping hundreds of pictures of the spectacle for the folks back home to ooh and aah over.

Two moons zip around the red planet and they're closer and faster than our lumbering moon, so eclipses are more common. Scientists say there's even somewhat of an eclipse season on Mars, and it's that time of year when those Martian moons take turns taking bites of the sun.

Curiosity turned its cameras skyward to watch the action in three different eclipses, starting last week and continuing Wednesday, when a moon partially slipped between Mars and the sun.

The rover has been beaming back a stream of photos of the Martian landscape since landing near the equator last month.

Texas A&M University scientist Mark Lemmon said the eclipse pictures will help scientists track the fate of the larger Martian moon, Phobos, which is slowing down in its orbit around Mars. In 10 to 15 million years, Phobos will get so close to Mars it will break up and crash into the planet.

These moons aren't mere curiosity factors. They get so close to Mars that "they change Mars' shape ever so slightly" with their pull, Lemmon said.

Past rovers have taken pictures of solar eclipses from Mars, but not with such good cameras that take high resolution photos and so many shots that it produces a movie of sorts, Lemmon said.

And now that Curiosity has gazed skyward, it's time for the Mini Cooper-sized spacecraft to focus on the ground. On Friday, Curiosity will test its first rock with a laser and other chemical testing kits on the end of its robotic arm.

Its first target is a pyramid-shaped dark rock, about 10 inches tall and 16 inches wide at the base. Two of the arm's chemical-sniffing devices will snuggle up against the rock ? named for Jake Matijevic, a Mars rover engineer who died recently ? so scientists can figure out what it is made of.

"It's just a cool looking rock sitting out there on the plains," said Mars Science Laboratory scientist John Grotzinger. But it's not that unusual and seems similar to rocks past rovers have tested before. That makes it a good start for the rover's testing equipment.

It's the type of rock that is scattered all over Mars probably blown out of a crater when it was hit by an asteroid or something, Grotzinger said.

Prejudice can cause depression at the societal, interpersonal, and intrapersonal levels

Although depression and prejudice traditionally fall into different areas of study and treatment, a new article suggests that many cases of depression may be caused by prejudice from the self or from another person. In an article published in the September 2012 issue of Perspectives on Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science, William Cox of the University of Wisconsin-Madison and colleagues argue that prejudice and depression are fundamentally connected.

Consider the following sentence: "I really hate _____. I hate the way _____ look. I hate the way _____ talk."

What words belong in the blanks? It's possible that the statement expresses prejudice toward a stigmatized group: "I really hate Black people," "I hate the way gay men look," or "I hate the way Jews talk." But this statement actually comes from a depressed patient talking about herself: "I really hate me. I hate the way I look. I hate the way I talk."

The fact that the statement could have been completed in two equally plausible ways hints at a deep connection between prejudice and depression. Indeed, Cox and colleagues argue that the kinds of stereotypes about others that lead to prejudice and the kinds of schemas about the self that lead to depression are fundamentally similar. Among many features that they have in common, stereotypes of prejudice and schemas of depression are typically well-rehearsed, automatic, and difficult to change.

Cox and colleagues propose an integrated perspective of prejudice and depression, which holds that stereotypes are activated in a "source" who then expresses prejudice toward a "target," causing the target to become depressed.

This depression caused by prejudice which the researchers call deprejudice can occur at many levels. In the classic case, prejudice causes depression at the societal level (e.g., Nazis' prejudice causing Jews' depression), but this causal chain can also occur at the interpersonal level (e.g., an abuser's prejudice causing an abusee's depression), or even at the intrapersonal level, within a single person (e.g., a man's prejudice against himself causing his depression).

The researchers state that the focus of their theory is on cases of depression that are driven primarily by the negative thoughts that people have about themselves or that others have about them and does not address "depressions caused by neurochemical, genetic, or inflammatory processes." Understanding that many people with depression are not "just" depressed they may have prejudice against themselves that causes their depression has powerful theoretical implications for treatment.

Cox and colleagues propose that interventions developed and used by depression researchers such as cognitive behavior therapy and mindfulness training may be especially useful in combating prejudice. And some interventions developed and used by prejudice researchers may be especially useful in treating depression.

Using a wider lens to see the common processes associated with depression and prejudice will help psychological scientists and clinicians to understand these phenomena better and develop cross-disciplinary interventions that can target both problems.

New Leaked Romney Video: Israeli Peace ?Almost Unthinkable?

?

A new and potentially embarrassing video has surfaced from the same fundraising event that got Mitt Romney into hot water on Monday, but this time the focus is on foreign policy and peace between Israelis and Palestinians, which he calls? "almost unthinkable."

In the video, Romney responds to a question about the ?Palestinian problem? by saying that Palestinians have "no interest whatsoever in establishing peace, and that the pathway to peace is almost unthinkable to accomplish."

The videos were first reported on the website for Mother Jones magazine.

In the lengthy and detailed comments at a fundraising dinner in Boca Raton, Fla., in May, Romney describes how he believes a two-state solution for Palestinians and Israelis would be nearly impossible to achieve, saying, ?I look at the Palestinians not wanting to see peace anyway, for political purposes, committed to the destruction and elimination of Israel, and these thorny issues, and I say, 'There's just no way.'"

Later, he says that, ?you recognize that this is going to remain an unsolved problem?and we kick the ball down the field and hope that ultimately, somehow, something will happen and resolve it.?

A two-state solution is officially endorsed in the Republican Party platform.

Romney added that "The idea of pushing on the Israelis to give something up to get the Palestinians to act is the worst idea in the world."

Romney also discusses Iran and attacks Obama as ?naive? in his foreign policy.

In the earlier video, Romney had said of the roughly 47 percent of Americans who don't pay federal income taxes that they see themselves as "victims" who are dependent on the federal government. He further said that "my job is not to worry about those people. I'll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives."
